The Journey That Found Me
People often ask how I became involved in interior design.
Looking back, it almost feels like something that quietly found me, rather than something I had carefully planned.
Years ago, while working in Singapore (2015), an unexpected opportunity led me into the television industry as part of an interior set styling team. At the time, I had no idea how much that experience would shape the years ahead.
Every day was different. Instead of spending hours behind a desk, I was constantly out searching for props, furniture, and decorative pieces to build scenes that only existed in a script a few days before.
It was exhausting.
It was chaotic.
And somehow, it was incredibly exciting.
Working alongside talented interior designers taught me more than I could have imagined. Beyond arranging beautiful spaces, I began to understand how atmosphere, storytelling, and thoughtful details could completely transform the way a place feels.
Eventually, life took another unexpected turn.
A close friend, whom I hadn't spoken to for quite some time, reached out with a simple question:
"Would you like to help source furniture and style homes for my clients?"
Without overthinking it, I left Singapore, returned to Malaysia (2017), and started a new chapter.
The very first project was unforgettable.
A sourcing trip to Foshan meant days of walking through countless furniture showrooms, making hundreds of design decisions within tight budgets and timelines. By the end of the trip, my feet could barely keep going, but two shipping containers—one 40-foot and one 20-foot—were filled with furniture destined for three empty homes waiting to come to life.
Looking back now, it feels almost unbelievable.
At the time, it simply felt like survival.
There were long drives between Kuala Lumpur and Johor with a car packed full of samples and supplies. There were stressful deadlines, difficult decisions, and plenty of moments filled with uncertainty.
Yet strangely...
I loved every minute of it.
For the first time, work didn't feel like simply having a job.
It felt like having a purpose.
Then the pandemic arrived.
Life changed again.
Family responsibilities became my priority, and after many years of working alongside a trusted business partner, our paths naturally went in different directions. While the business continued to grow in Kuala Lumpur, I returned to Melaka to care for my family and build a smaller studio that reflected the way I wanted to work.
That was when LoElle Design (2019) was born.
Looking through old project photos today, I'm reminded that none of this happened alone.
Many designers, mentors, friends, clients, and partners believed in me long before I fully believed in myself. They gave me opportunities, shared their knowledge generously, and encouraged me to keep learning.
Without them, this journey would have looked very different.
I'm still learning.
I'm still curious.
And perhaps the best way to describe this journey is this:
Every step has been taken with equal parts fear and courage.
Looking back, gratitude is what remains the most.
